THDC India (THDCIL) successfully commissioned the 2nd Unit (660 MW) of the (2x660 MW) Khurja Super Thermal Power Project (KSTPP) in Uttar Pradesh on September 22, 2025. The Commercial Operation Date (COD) was inaugurated virtually by Union Minister of Power, Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal.
The event saw participation from senior officials including A K Sharma, Minister of Energy & Urban Development, Government of UP, Narendra Bhooshan (IAS), Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Energy & Renewable Energy, UP, along with THDCIL leadership and representatives from the project consortium comprising NTPC, BHEL, Steag, RITES, GE Vernova, L&T, and EMERSON.
Manohar Lal congratulated THDCIL for achieving this milestone, highlighting KSTPP’s role in strengthening grid stability and meeting Uttar Pradesh’s energy needs. He noted that THDCIL, traditionally a hydropower company, has set an industry benchmark by completing this thermal project in record time. A K Sharma lauded the project’s contribution to making UP self-reliant in energy, while Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson, CEA, emphasized its importance in modern, efficient power infrastructure development.
The 1320 MW plant, implemented through 14 specialized packages, achieved COD of the first unit on January 26, 2025, and the second unit on September 22, 2025, despite challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic. Equipped with ultra-supercritical technology, high-efficiency environmental safeguards, and a captive coal linkage from Amelia Mine, the project is designed to generate 9,264 MU annually. The equity of THDCIL is shared between NTPC and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.
