Liebherr Cranes Brave Harsh Seas for Ytre Steinsund Bridge

Four Liebherr high-top cranes are playing a vital role in constructing the Ytre Steinsund Bridge along Norway’s rugged coastline. The cranes’ robust technology and adaptable design are enabling safe and efficient operations despite harsh winds, strong waves, and tight project timelines.

The Ytre Steinsund Bridge, now under construction in western Norway, is set to be completed by the end of 2026. Once operational, the cantilever bridge will enhance connectivity between coastal regions near Hardbakke. To meet the project’s demanding conditions along the Sognefjord, the construction team has deployed four powerful Liebherr EC-H series tower cranes. These cranes are designed to operate reliably in severe weather while adapting flexibly to complex site requirements.

The Sognefjord region is known for its challenging climate, marked by gusty winds and turbulent seas. To tackle these conditions, three Liebherr 280 EC-H 12 Litronic cranes—with hook heights reaching 60.3 metres—and one 132 EC-H crane with a 27.5-metre hook height are in operation. Featuring working radii of up to 60 metres, these high-top cranes handle steel and concrete components with precision, often lifting materials directly from boats to the bridge structure. The advanced Litronic control system ensures stable and smooth movements, even in fluctuating wind speeds.

To guarantee secure anchoring and optimal stability, the Liebherr cranes are mounted on a variety of foundations. Three of the four cranes are installed on cross bases and solid concrete foundations with anchoring, while one EC-H crane stands directly in the fjord on a specially designed steel frame. This frame is partly cantilevered over the water and anchored to the seabed, showcasing Liebherr’s ability to customise solutions for unique environments.

The Liebherr cranes are pivotal in the bridge’s construction process. Steel and concrete sections are delivered by vessel and lifted directly from moving boats onto the bridge deck. These operations require exceptional precision and reliability—qualities that the Liebherr EC-H series consistently deliver.

With their durable design, flexible installation options, and intelligent control systems, Liebherr’s EC-H cranes are ensuring seamless progress on the Ytre Steinsund Bridge project—contributing to a landmark that will significantly enhance regional infrastructure and connectivity.
