In a major step towards conserving Kolkata’s cultural heritage, the Adani Group has partnered with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK), to redevelop the historic Kumartuli Ghat. Known for its generations-old idol-making tradition, the ghat will undergo restoration to become safer, cleaner, and more accessible for artisans, residents, and tourists alike.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on Friday between SMPK and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) under the port’s ‘Swachhata’ initiative. The project is a public-private partnership designed to rejuvenate the ghat along the Hooghly river, with emphasis on heritage preservation and environmental responsibility.
“This is not just restoration but a revival of Bengal’s artistic legacy,” said SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman. APSEZ’s President of Business Development, Subrat Tripathy, added, “It is an honour to renovate a site so deeply tied to Kolkata’s identity. It will become a proud cultural landmark and tourist attraction.”
