Arakkonam Chengalpattu Doubling Approved For Chennai Suburban Rail
The Union Minister for Railways indicated that the project will play a significant role in easing congestion on the busy suburban network while improving punctuality and operational efficiency. He noted that the doubling will strengthen both passenger and freight movement along the corridor. The enhancement is intended to benefit transportation of key commodities such as cement, automobiles, food grains, iron and steel.
At present the existing single line is operating at a high level of capacity utilisation and traffic is expected to increase further in the coming years, necessitating additional infrastructure augmentation. The doubling work is expected to reduce detention time of trains and improve punctuality across services. It will also enable an increase in the frequency of suburban services and contribute to more reliable scheduling. Improved freight throughput will support timely movement of consignments to and from regional factories and reduce logistical bottlenecks.
The route serves several major economic and industrial hubs including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai and passes close to important automobile, cement and manufacturing industries. The proposed Parandur Airport project near Kancheepuram adds to the strategic importance of the alignment. The approval marks a further step in modernising rail infrastructure to enhance network capacity and operational efficiency and is expected to strengthen suburban and freight connectivity, supporting regional industrial growth and providing faster, safer and more reliable transportation services. These enhancements are intended to ease daily commuting pressures and to create capacity for additional services during peak hours.
