Cabinet Approves Srinagar Airport Expansion To 71,500 Sqmt

The Union cabinet has approved the expansion of Srinagar Airport to 71,500 square metre from the existing 20,659 square metre and has sanctioned an investment of Rs 16,770 million. The decision was announced as part of a broader effort to upgrade aviation infrastructure in the region.

The expanded terminal will raise the airport's built-up area by more than threefold, allowing for increased passenger handling and enhanced operational facilities. The investment figure corresponds to Rs 16,770 mn and will cover construction, modernisation of passenger amenities and allied works. Authorities outlined that the project will include improvements to terminal circulation spaces and support services.

Project implementation is expected to follow standard tendering and regulatory clearances and will be overseen by the relevant central and local agencies. Timelines and phasing were not detailed in the announcement but authorities indicated that preparatory work will commence following approvals. The expansion is intended to strengthen air connectivity and accommodate future traffic growth.

Stakeholders in tourism and commerce are anticipated to benefit from better airport capacity and improved passenger experience. The upgrade is part of ongoing infrastructure investments aimed at supporting economic activity in the valley. Officials said the expansion will align with broader plans to modernise transport hubs in the region.

The project is expected to generate temporary employment opportunities during the construction phase and to engage local contractors and suppliers for ancillary works. Procurement and contracting procedures will follow established norms to ensure transparency and timely delivery. Authorities emphasised the need for capacity building among airport staff to manage the enlarged facilities.

Environmental assessments and regulatory clearances will be completed as part of the project preparatory stage and mitigation measures will be incorporated into designs. Community consultations were noted as an element of the planning process to address local concerns and incorporate feedback. The airport expansion is projected to play a long term role in bolstering connectivity and supporting sustainable development in the region.
