Concerns Raised Over Safety On Busy NH-55
Attention has focused on the use and compaction of fly ash in several projects along the corridor after prolonged rainfall washed ash from portions of the structures, raising fears that ongoing erosion could form voids beneath the road surface. Official sources said around 270 defective works have been identified for rectification on the Sambalpur-Angul stretch. Repair work at many of the identified locations is under way.
Records indicate that the work on parts of the corridor was executed by AIPL as a subcontractor under Gayatri Infra while another agency, Dhingra Brothers (India), has been engaged to carry out repairs. The role of the project consultancy in design, supervision and inspection has come under scrutiny because defects emerged despite multiple layers of oversight and checks before bills were cleared. Several potholes have appeared at multiple locations and local road users have attributed deterioration to poor quality construction.
The Opposition has pressed the administration for a formal inquiry, with the BJD district president calling for an investigation into the Rs 12 billion (bn) NH-55 project and questioning the silence of local authorities after an FIR was reportedly lodged in Jagatsinghpur over alleged poor quality work. Officials have said corrective action is under way and that further inspections will be carried out to ensure road safety on the corridor. Continued oversight and transparent reporting have been urged to restore confidence among commuters.
