Delhi to Fast-Track Rs. 70 bn Elevated Ring Road Plan

The Delhi government plans to accelerate its Rs. 70 bn elevated Ring Road project after persistent congestion on the newly opened Barapullah Phase 3 flyover, officials said. The 55-km project is intended to improve connectivity between Trans-Yamuna areas and the rest of the capital while reducing pressure on key sections of the existing Ring Road.

The project includes two new bridges over the Yamuna. Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Singh Verma said the detailed project report for the first package had been prepared and recently approved by the Chief Minister, allowing the government to move ahead with long-term measures to improve traffic management.

As part of the decongestion plan, the government is working on a new bridge near the existing Signature Bridge. A second flyover is planned between Metcalfe House and the Delhi-Noida-Direct flyway near Ashram. Officials said the need for additional road capacity had become more urgent following the opening of Barapullah Phase 3 and rising traffic volumes around Sarai Kale Khan.

The first priority sections are planned between Azadpur Flyover and Hanuman Temple at ISBT, covering 9.5 km; Chandgi Ram Akhara and Majnu Ka Tilla, covering 2.5 km; and Hanuman Temple at ISBT and DND Flyover, covering 11.5 km. These stretches are expected to form the initial stages of the wider elevated corridor.

Once completed, the elevated road will link the Azadpur flyover near Mukarba Chowk with the DND road, which connects onward to the Ashram flyover. The government expects the corridor to improve traffic flow across central, east, southeast and Trans-Yamuna Delhi, while providing additional crossings over the Yamuna and easing congestion on existing routes.
