Google.org Backs The/Nudge with $15 mn for India's MSMEs

Google.org has committed $15 mn in funding to The/Nudge to support the growth and digital adoption of India’s micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The funding is intended to help address challenges faced by small businesses in accessing credit, managing compliance and reaching digital markets.

India has more than 90 mn small businesses, which collectively employ over 345 mn people. Despite their contribution to employment and economic activity, many MSMEs continue to face barriers in accessing formal financial services and using digital channels to expand their operations.

The funding will support the development of scalable artificial intelligence (AI) tools for MSMEs. These tools will focus on improving access to formal credit, strengthening market discovery and providing compliance solutions for businesses that may lack the resources or expertise to manage these functions independently.

The initiative forms part of Google.org’s efforts to support India’s national AI roadmap. It will include an open call for proposals to identify innovative solutions designed to address the needs of MSMEs and improve the usefulness of technology for businesses operating across different sectors and locations.

The programme will also feature a multilingual, voice-led platform to train local talent in Tier 3 and Tier 4 towns in job-ready skills. The platform is intended to connect trained individuals directly with small businesses, creating a link between local workforce development and the digital requirements of MSMEs.

Google.org provides funding, programmes and technical expertise to organisations working to expand access to opportunities. Its focus areas include knowledge, skills and learning, scientific progress and stronger communities, while using Google’s technology, research and resources to support initiatives addressing social and economic challenges.
