Government Constitutes AI Governance And Economic Group

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has constituted the AI Governance and Economic Group (AIGEG), a high-level inter-ministerial body that will serve as India’s central institutional mechanism for AI governance policy development and coordination. The group has been established to provide a coherent national strategy and to align the actions of ministries, departments, regulators and advisory bodies. The constitution of the AIGEG gives formal effect to recommendations in India’s AI Governance Guidelines and to proposals in the Economic Survey.

It will be chaired by the Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways and Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, with Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Electronics and IT and Commerce and Industry, serving as vice-chairperson. Membership brings together senior stakeholders across policy development, science and technology, security and economic affairs. The AIGEG will convene officials to consider regulatory alignment, research priorities and inter-agency coordination.

The AIGEG will operate as the apex inter-ministerial body within the national AI governance institutional framework and will be supported by a Technology and Policy Expert Committee (TPEC). The expert committee will offer advisory input on global developments, emerging technologies, risk assessment, regulatory approaches and evolving priorities relating to AI policy and governance. It will also consider labour market impacts and social stability as part of its remit.

The establishment of the AIGEG is intended to align AI deployment with labour realities and national stability priorities while promoting responsible innovation and coordination across government. The constitution implements recommendations from the AI Governance Guidelines and reflects the Economic Survey emphasis on a coordinating authority. For details of composition and terms of reference the ministry has published a document providing full text and contact points online.
