HCLTech and Transport for NSW Sign MoU on AI Traffic Analytics
The MoU will examine integrating Sarvam multilingual foundation models with SCATS to extend access to traffic data and insights in Indian languages. The initiative aims to identify technical pathways for local deployment and language enabled analytics.
SCATS, developed by the New South Wales Government in 1975, supports adaptive traffic control and is installed in over 200 cities across more than 30 countries. The system allows users to interrogate traffic, congestion and geospatial data using natural language queries and to compare insights across selected time periods.
HCLTech will explore enabling operators, planners and engineers to query and analyse SCATS data in local Indian languages through Sarvam models. The effort is intended to make complex traffic information more usable for operational staff who manage urban transport networks and will consider tuning multilingual models to domain specific terminology and local traffic patterns.
The collaboration will also examine approaches to meet data sovereignty requirements for smart city infrastructure and to support on premises operation of SCATS artificial intelligence infrastructure in private cloud environments. Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, described SCATS as an example of local innovation with international impact and framed the partnership as a means to make sophisticated traffic information more accessible to those managing growing cities in India. Swapan Johri, President for Growth Markets at HCLTech, outlined the intention to combine SCATS' traffic management capabilities with HCLTech's artificial intelligence and engineering expertise to put operational insights into the hands of city operators.
