IAF Opens Technical Officer Entry Via GATE Scores

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has announced a new route for induction into the Technical Branch for officers, allowing eligible candidates to seek consideration on the basis of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering scores. The Ministry of Defence issued the scheme as an addition to existing entry pathways and stated that candidates with a valid GATE score would be directly eligible for shortlisting for testing at the Air Force Selection Boards (AFSBs). The change aims to widen access for engineering graduates while preserving established recruitment standards.

Under the scheme, selection will be determined on merit and qualified applicants will be exempted from the preliminary written examination such as the Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT). The GATE score provision is applicable exclusively for induction into the Technical Branch and does not replace AFCAT, which will continue to operate as the standard admission test for induction across all branches, including the Technical Branch. Applicants are therefore able to pursue either route.

Entry level educational qualifications under the GATE score scheme will remain aligned with existing induction criteria for the Technical Branch through AFCAT, ensuring parity in academic requirements. The IAF has promulgated a comprehensive list of acceptable GATE subjects in AFCAT Notification two/2026, which is available on official recruitment websites. Prospective candidates are advised to consult the notification for detailed subject eligibility and application instructions.

The scheme permits eligible candidates to apply for the Technical Branch via both AFCAT and the GATE score route, providing flexibility in application strategy. The IAF framed the arrangement to expand opportunity without altering core selection procedures and to maintain merit based assessment at the AFSBs. Candidates remain responsible for meeting all other standards and timelines specified in official guidance.

For regular updates on officers' entry schemes the IAF has directed aspirants to follow official DISHA Indian Air Force social media channels and the career portal. The announcement was issued by the Ministry of Defence on 26 May 2026 as part of ongoing efforts to modernise recruitment pathways for technical officers.
