IEX Electricity Trade Volume Rises 10.4 Per Cent in September

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) reported a 10.4 per cent year-on-year increase in electricity trade volume to 12.2 bn units (BU) in September. The exchange said its traded volume during the second quarter of FY27 reached 39.69 bn units (MU), representing a 12.7 per cent increase from the corresponding period a year earlier.

The average market clearing price in the day-ahead market (DAM) rose 46 per cent year-on-year to Rs. 5.7 per unit in Q2 FY27. The average price in the real-time market (RTM) increased 49 per cent to Rs. 5.2 per unit during the quarter. India’s energy consumption reached 502 BUs in the period, registering year-on-year growth of 11.5 per cent.

In September, the country’s energy consumption stood at 162 BUs, up 11 per cent from a year earlier, while peak power demand reached 269 GW on September 10. Strong demand contributed to a 281 per cent year-on-year increase in buy bids in the DAM. The average DAM clearing price rose 105 per cent to Rs. 7.3 per unit, while the RTM price increased 108 per cent to Rs. 6.9 per unit.

DAM volumes, including the high-price day-ahead market, totalled 14,855 MU in Q2 FY27, compared with 14,534 MU in Q2 FY26, an increase of 2.2 per cent. RTM volumes stood at 16,490 MU, against 14,925 MU a year earlier, rising 10.5 per cent. RTM volume in September increased 10.6 per cent to 5,294 MU from 4,786 MU.

The day-ahead contingency and term-ahead market traded 5,477 MU during the quarter, up 101.5 per cent from 2,719 MU. The IEX Green Market volume declined 5.8 per cent to 2,863 MU, while September volume fell 32 per cent to 737 MU. Renewable energy certificate trading sessions were held on September 26 and 30, and the next sessions are scheduled for October 14 and 28.
