Infrastructure development in the Kalakote subdivision of Rajouri district has received a significant boost as authorities pursue upgrades to facilities for students, government employees and the general public. The Assistant Executive Engineer of Roads and Buildings, Vikas Gupta, said several projects are under way in the division, including construction of school buildings, higher education facilities, ward roads and Central Road Fund roads. He added that the tendering process for municipal works is about to commence, which will initiate additional projects.

Gupta said contractors have been issued notices to expedite ongoing work as rainfall decreases, with the objective of completing and handing over projects as soon as possible. He provided cost details, noting that a single-classroom unit is being built at a cost of Rs 7.47 lakh (about Rs 0.75 million (mn)), the ETT building project is valued at Rs 1.40 crore (14 million (mn)) and the Power Development Department building is budgeted at Rs 184 lakh (18.4 million (mn)). The veterinary hospital building has been completed and minor finishing works remain on other sites. Officials expect the prioritisation of works to improve access and learning conditions once handovers are completed.

Local teachers reported that older school buildings had multiple problems, including a leaking roof and broken windowpanes that caused repeated inconvenience to students and hindered daily routines. A teacher from the area praised the construction quality of the new building and commended the contractor while urging prompt completion of remaining minor works so the facility can be formally handed over for student use. Community feedback has underscored the immediate need for safe and watertight learning spaces.

Separately, flash floods following heavy rain on July 19 caused extensive damage to agricultural land and crops along rivers and streams in the Saaj and Plangher areas of Rajouri, and farmers reported heavy losses. Residents described how floodwaters eroded ground beneath houses and swept away paddy fields, maize crops, livestock enclosures and other assets. The reports underline the concurrent challenges facing the subdivision as infrastructure upgrades proceed alongside recovery needs.
