Jamnagar in Gujarat is advancing a package of infrastructure projects worth Rs 12 billion (Rs 12 bn) under the Urban Development Year initiative to strengthen civic amenities and position the city as a major industrial hub. The city, also known as Chhoti Kashi, is seeing construction activity and foundation stone ceremonies for schemes that cover transport, civic services and cultural facilities. Municipal officials described the programme as a coordinated effort to accelerate development and raise living standards across urban neighbourhoods.

Key components include flyovers at Lalpur Chokdi on the ring road and at Theba Chokdi on Kalavad Road to ease congestion, upgraded roads and new pipelines to secure water distribution, and modernisation of the sewage system. An auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,250 and a sports complex are planned to expand cultural and recreational infrastructure. Health services are being addressed through the construction of modern hospitals to bolster local healthcare capacity. Complementary works include drainage improvements, upgraded street lighting and traffic management measures to reduce bottlenecks and improve safety.

Local authorities said the works are expected to create employment opportunities during construction and to improve long-term economic prospects by supporting industry and services. The administration noted that the Nal Se Jal scheme has extended tap water supply to newly developed areas and that pipeline projects are being coordinated with overall urban planning. Municipal Commissioner D.N. Modi confirmed that various projects totalling about Rs 12 bn have been inaugurated or had foundation stones laid in recent weeks.

The Gujarat government has framed a 25-year roadmap for Jamnagar which aims to sustain infrastructure growth and to manage expansion. State allocations under the Smart City programme have been directed to meet stipulated timelines while the municipal corporation focuses on project delivery and maintenance of assets. Officials indicated that completing the announced schemes will be central to efforts to secure long term job creation and to enhance the quality of urban services. They added that oversight mechanisms and community engagement will accompany construction to ensure timely completion and to deliver benefits to residents.
