The Jamshedpur Northern Area Committee is set to launch five major infrastructure projects this month, funded through the 15th Finance Commission at a combined cost of Rs 41.6 million (mn). The programme is designed to tackle chronic traffic congestion, improve urban drainage and expand green cover across key neighbourhoods. JNAC deputy municipal commissioner Krishna Kumar said the measures will modernise basic infrastructure and smooth traffic flow, with attention to densely populated and commercial corridors.

The five-point plan includes targeted interventions across the city, with specific allocations for traffic relief, drainage, green cover and new connectivity. The Sakchi traffic relief scheme will pave commercial roads with paver blocks and organise parking at an estimated Rs 10.19 mn, while drainage solutions will install iron screen meshes in major drains to prevent waste blockage and flooding at about Rs 9.98 mn. A green initiative will fund plantation and three-year maintenance of saplings in Bagunhatu and Neembhatta with protective fencing for roughly Rs 9.15 mn. A new road linking Durgabadi to Soshti Path is budgeted at about Rs 3.43 mn, and internal reconstruction in Shastri Nagar is accounted for within the total.

In anticipation of the monsoon, the committee has launched a desilting campaign covering 56 major drains across Jamshedpur. Seventy sanitation workers have been deployed, with 40 assigned to the eastern zone and 30 to the western zone, and the operation is scheduled for completion before heavy rains. The initiative aims to reduce the risk of household and neighbourhood waterlogging by clearing accumulated silt and waste and improving flow through primary drainage channels.

A significant portion of the investment will connect internal lanes of various bastis to the main Marine Drive using durable paver blocks and modern construction techniques to improve accessibility and the public realm. The programme is expected to benefit residents, traders and daily commuters by reducing travel delays and enhancing resilience to seasonal rainfall. Implementation will proceed during the month to meet the municipal timeline.
