Murugappa Group company Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech) has announced the launch of its advanced electric heavy commercial vehicle (eHCV) manufacturing facility at Manesar in Haryana. The plant is the firm’s first all-women fully automated battery production unit.
Designed to produce 6,000 eHCVs annually, the facility can be expanded to 7,500 units. The factory represents a key milestone in India’s shift towards sustainable freight solutions, reinforcing Montra Electric’s leadership in the segment.
P V Satyanarayana, Chief Business Officer at Montra Electric HCV (IPL Tech), said: “The inauguration of our EV truck factory in Manesar marks a defining step in India’s transition to sustainable logistics. This facility combines scale, flexibility, and world-class quality, with modular lines capable of producing multiple variants and advanced digital manufacturing tools.”
For the first time, the Manesar plant will deploy automated guided vehicles integrated with conveyor lines to support eHCV production. Spread over 255,000 sq ft with a built-up area of 150,000 sq ft, the plant is capable of manufacturing multiple product variants, including the Rhino EV series and future models.
Montra Electric has integrated 60 per cent robotics and full Industry 4.0 digital manufacturing practices. The facility will feature in-house battery pack assembly with 1.7 GWh capacity and extensive testing infrastructure, including electrical and electronics labs, quality assurance labs, battery cyclers, roll and brake testers, wheel alignment systems, headlamp aiming, and shower testing.
The company will source 74 per cent of components locally, excluding imported cells, highlighting its focus on localisation and supply chain resilience. Montra Electric also plans to apply for benefits under the PM E-Drive Scheme and explore additional state-level incentives to support its expansion.
