The proposed Rs 2.5 billion twin flyover project on Nagpur–Katol Road has moved closer to execution nearly three years after it was announced. Officials said the National Highways Division of the state Public Works Department will submit the detailed project report to the state government for approval. The project will move to the tendering stage after approval. The revised plan replaces a continuous flyover with two elevated corridors along NH-353J between Old Katol Naka Square and New Katol Naka. The combined length of the structures is 2.25 kilometres. The design remains within the existing right of way, eliminating the need for land acquisition according to Public Works Department officials. The first flyover, about one point three two five kilometres long, will begin near the Police Headquarters, pass over Gittikhadan Square and end near KT Nagar. The second, approximately 925 metres long, will start before the Ring Road junction and terminate near the New Katol Naka toll plaza. The section between the two flyovers will remain at ground level as it is largely bordered by defence land. The project includes widening and reconstruction of the entire four point six kilometres corridor with cement concrete pavement and upgrading to a four-lane carriageway. Cement concrete service roads will be provided on both sides.\n\nThe Katol Road corridor has seen rapid urbanisation and carries heavy traffic from residential neighbourhoods, educational institutions and vehicles travelling towards Katol, Chhindwara and surrounding areas. Once completed the twin flyovers are expected to ease congestion, improve road safety and reduce travel time, and the project is currently estimated to cost around Rs two point five bn, although the final cost may be revised before government approval.
