Naveen Jindal Group In Talks For Nuclear Projects

Naveen Jindal Group has opened talks with global nuclear technology providers, including France-based EDF and US-based Westinghouse, over proposed nuclear projects in India. News agency PTI attributed the information to a person with knowledge of the matter and said the group has held parallel discussions with domestic and international suppliers. The engagement represents early-stage assessment rather than final commitments.

The conglomerate plans to develop around 18 gigawatt (GW) of nuclear capacity across multiple states with an estimated investment of Rs two trillion (tn), the source said, aligning the proposal with the government's 100 GW target by 2047. The capacity figure positions the group among private investors seeking roles in a sector opening to private capital. Details of project timelines have not been finalised.

Talks with the Nuclear Power Corporation of India were reported to explore sourcing technology for large module reactors of 700 megawatt (MW) and above while site evaluations proceed in more than nine states. Technologies under consideration include EDF's 1,650 MW European Pressurised Reactor design, Westinghouse's 1,150 MW AP1000 and NPCIL's 700 MW Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor. The final technology mix will follow assessments of safety, scalability and commercial viability.

Jindal Nuclear Power Private Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Jindal Renewables, is evaluating sites in Gujarat, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh among others. The projects are intended to deploy large module reactors and to integrate with the group's broader energy portfolio.

Tata Power and NTPC have also announced nuclear plans by 2047, with NTPC implementing projects through a joint venture with NPCIL in Rajasthan. Naveen Jindal Group's proposed capacity and vendor discussions mark a notable step in the private expansion of India's nuclear sector.
