The North Eastern Council (NEC) has released Rs 135.8 mn for development projects in Meghalaya over the last two months, aimed at accelerating inclusive development across the state. The funding was sanctioned under the Schemes of NEC during May–June 2026 and covers healthcare, road connectivity, renewable energy, education and community infrastructure. NEC officials said the allocations are intended to support equitable access to services and improve quality of life.

Key allocations include support for the installation of a one point five Tesla MRI system at Tura Civil Hospital, which is expected to significantly improve diagnostic services for patients in Garo Hills and neighbouring areas. The council has also backed infrastructure work at Shillong Polytechnic and a multi disciplinary training?cum?resource centre being developed by NERCORMS to strengthen technical education, research and innovation. These measures are intended to enhance institutional capacity and open avenues for skills development.

Financial assistance has been provided for cultural projects such as the Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and the Seinraij Jowai Community Hall, while Iewduh Market will undergo infrastructure upgrades to improve facilities for traders, farmers and consumers. In the energy sector the NEC funded surveys and investigations for the Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage?II and Selim hydroelectric projects to inform future clean energy development. The release noted that such preparatory work is a step towards sustainable power generation and regional energy security.

NEC also released Rs 189.3 mn to regional institutions, universities, technical institutes, NGOs and societies across the Northeast to support events, research and capacity building. Part of this support financed initiatives held in Meghalaya, including the Industry Academia Research Conclave?2025 at NIT Meghalaya and the Miss and Mister Beauty Pageant 2026 at NEIGRIHMS. The council described the investments as reaffirming its commitment to strengthening healthcare, education, connectivity, renewable energy and public infrastructure across Meghalaya.
