NXP Semiconductors has announced UCODE X, a next-generation RAIN RFID chip offering industry-leading read and write sensitivity, flexible memory configurations and the lowest power consumption in its class. The solution supports smaller RAIN RFID labels, opening up new high-volume use cases across retail, logistics, healthcare and pharmaceuticals.
The launch comes as global product traceability and consumer safety regulations continue to evolve, including the EU Digital Product Passport and the US FSMA 204 framework. UCODE X allows critical product data such as expiration dates, lot numbers and recycling information to be stored directly on the chip, while maintaining the speed and accuracy required for large-scale operations.
According to NXP, the chip’s advanced RF performance and configurable memory enable reliable tagging of challenging items such as cosmetics, food and medicines, helping brands and retailers scale RFID adoption while meeting compliance requirements.
Industry partners have highlighted the operational impact of the new chip. Nedap noted that UCODE X enhances continuous overhead reading and real-time inventory visibility, supporting dependable, day-to-day retail operations. Zebra Technologies said the chip’s performance and compliance with the GS1 Gen2V2 standard will help accelerate RAIN RFID adoption across multiple sectors.
UCODE X is built on the non-proprietary GS1 Gen2V2 standard, ensuring interoperability with a broad ecosystem of RFID readers and encoders. It also includes full support for the Gen2V2 Untraceable command to address consumer privacy concerns. Designed to enable smaller inlays and reduced material use, the chip also supports sustainability goals while improving inventory management, loss prevention and regulatory compliance.
