The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) told the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that only 450 metres of a planned 1,140 metres of sewer lines had been laid in the Janakpuri area of west Delhi. The disclosure indicated that 690 metres of the network remained incomplete and behind schedule. The DJB reported that progress had been affected by contractor performance and site constraints. The tribunal was informed of the shortfall during a compliance hearing.

The tribunal sought a timeline for completion and information on steps being taken to accelerate work. The DJB submitted details of ongoing mobilisation of resources and said it would prioritise work in the affected stretches. Officials outlined coordination efforts with municipal agencies to secure access and clear obstructions. The tribunal directed the board to file an updated progress report within the timeline set for the matter.

Incomplete sewer infrastructure in residential localities can exacerbate sewage stagnation, create sanitation hazards and increase the risk of water contamination, particularly during the monsoon season. The DJB acknowledged these risks and said remedial measures had been planned for critical locations. Residents in adjoining sectors have previously reported foul odours and drainage problems, which officials said were under review. The board indicated that technical teams were surveying sites to finalise priorities.

The board is expected to accelerate civil works, increase supervisory inspections and engage additional contractors where necessary to meet the revised schedule. The DJB indicated that financial allocations and resource deployment were being reviewed to support expedited execution. The tribunal will monitor compliance and may call for further updates at the next hearing. Authorities emphasised the need for timely completion to protect public health and maintain urban services.
