Piyush Goyal to Lead CEPA Talks and Business Delegation in Canada

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal will visit Canada from May 25 to 27 to advance negotiations on the Comprehensive Economic and Partnership Agreement and to lead official business interactions. He will be accompanied by senior representatives from over 100 Indian businesses across metals and mining, energy, automotive and capital goods, aerospace, tourism, leather and textiles, agriculture, telecom and pharmaceuticals. The delegation will pursue trade and investment partnerships.

He will meet the Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu and will call on the Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney to review CEPA progress and strategic cooperation. Meetings are scheduled with the Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand and with chief executives of Canadian companies, startups and pension funds. Bilateral trade in FY2025-26 stood at United States dollar (USD) eight bn, of which India’s exports were USD four point six seven bn and imports were USD three point two eight bn.

Energy security and transition are priority areas, with Canada’s energy and natural resource base seen as complementary to India’s growing requirements. Civil nuclear cooperation remains a cornerstone of the energy partnership and will be part of bilateral discussions. Science and technology cooperation, including artificial intelligence research, standards and innovation ecosystems, is identified for deeper collaboration.

Sustained high level engagement since mid 2025 and the recent visit of the Canadian Prime Minister in March 2026 have helped restore momentum in bilateral relations and people to people ties. An official Canadian delegation visited New Delhi from May four to seven 2026 for the second round of CEPA negotiations. Both sides are committed to fast tracking the talks and have envisaged increasing bilateral trade to USD 50 bn by 2030.

Canada hosts a two point eight million (mn) Indian diaspora who form a living bridge between the nations. The visit aims to strengthen cooperation and mutual trust.
