Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs Manohar Lal is on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the progress of key hydroelectric projects being implemented by NHPC in the Union Territory. He arrived in Jammu earlier today along with Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary (Power), Ministry of Power, Government of India.

The Minister was briefed by Bhupendra Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, NHPC, on the status of ongoing and upcoming hydroelectric projects in Jammu and Kashmir. The visit includes inspections of major project sites located in Reasi, Ramban and Kishtwar districts.

On the first day of the visit, Manohar Lal inspected NHPC’s Salal Power Project in Reasi district, where officials apprised him of the ongoing works. He directed NHPC to expedite sediment removal operations from the Salal reservoir to ensure optimal utilisation of water resources. The Salal Power Station, situated on the Chenab River, has undertaken sediment removal works following the termination of the Indus Waters Treaty, with the objective of removing accumulated silt and enhancing power generation efficiency.

During his visit to the Salal project, the Minister also participated in a plantation drive within the power station premises, highlighting the government’s emphasis on environmental conservation alongside infrastructure development. He held discussions with the local administration and senior officials from concerned departments to ensure coordination and timely execution of project-related works.

En route to Kishtwar, Manohar Lal conducted an aerial inspection of the 1,856 MW Sawalkot Hydroelectric Project to review progress and site conditions. Upon reaching Kishtwar, he visited the Ratle Hydroelectric Project, where he laid the foundation stone for dam concreting works. The Minister encouraged the project team to complete construction activities efficiently and within stipulated timelines.

The visit underscores the Centre’s focus on strengthening hydropower capacity in Jammu and Kashmir as part of broader efforts to enhance energy security and regional development.
