The President of India has appointed Praveen Vashista as Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) under the provisions of the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003. The appointment was made through a warrant dated December 12, 2025, exercising the powers conferred under Section 4(1) of the Act.

Praveen Vashista took the oath of office and secrecy on January 16, 2026, before the Central Vigilance Commissioner, who was authorised by the President of India in accordance with Section 5(3) of the CVC Act, 2003. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Vigilance Commission.

An Indian Police Service officer of the Bihar cadre, Vashista belongs to the 1991 batch and brings with him over three decades of experience in policing, internal security and public administration. Over the course of his career, he has handled a wide range of sensitive and critical assignments across the state and central governments.

In Bihar, he has served as Inspector General of the Economic Offences Wing and the Criminal Investigation Department. As Superintendent of Police, he was responsible for maintaining law and order in several challenging districts, including Ranchi, Dumka and Garhwa. He has also served in the Central Bureau of Investigation as Superintendent of Police and Deputy Inspector General, gaining extensive exposure to complex investigations.

During his tenure on central deputation, Vashista held key positions in the Ministry of Home Affairs, including Joint Secretary, Additional Secretary, Officer on Special Duty and Special Secretary (Internal Security), contributing to policy formulation and internal security management.

Under the Central Vigilance Commission Act, 2003, the CVC comprises a Central Vigilance Commissioner and two Vigilance Commissioners. The Vigilance Commissioner holds office for a term of four years or until attaining the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier.
