The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has unveiled plans for a Sabarmati riverfront-style makeover of the Dahisar river in north Mumbai. The proposal seeks to transform the river corridor into a managed waterfront with a continuous promenade, landscaped open spaces and measures to reduce flooding. Officials framed the initiative as an effort to improve urban resilience and public access to the river.

The project design proposes dedicated walkways and cycle tracks, seating areas, viewing decks and lighting, alongside a planted green buffer to filter runoff and enhance biodiversity. Engineers proposed the consolidation of riverbanks and the construction of stepped terraces to stabilise slopes and create accessible edges. The design also includes improved stormwater systems to channel monsoon flows safely.

Environmental safeguards are intended to include restoration of existing mangrove patches and the phased removal of encroachments on the floodplain. The civic body indicated that sewage interception and localised treatment will be prioritised to prevent pollution of the river. Consultants recommended ecological landscaping using native species to support local birdlife and reduce maintenance needs.

The plan envisages phased implementation to limit disruption, with early works focused on flood mitigation and essential services. Authorities suggested coordination with transport agencies to improve last-mile connectivity and with community groups to integrate informal livelihoods. Design teams proposed adaptive elements so that public spaces can tolerate seasonal variations in water level.

Officials projected the riverfront will offer recreation, safer pedestrian movement and enhanced property resilience along the corridor while contributing to urban cooling. The corporation indicated that detailed estimates and tendering timelines will be published as studies conclude. Stakeholders were invited to participate in forthcoming consultations on design details and implementation sequencing.
