Telangana Tops Retail Inflation For Seventh Month
MoSPI data indicated Telangana's inflation moved from four point nine two per cent in January to six point three two per cent in July, rising through the intervening months. The pattern marks a sharp shift from 2025, when the state recorded deflation for five months. Analysts attributed the rise to a combination of local supply pressures and changes in measurement. The divergence from national trends has attracted attention from economists and policymakers.
In July other states with elevated inflation included Andhra Pradesh at five point seven two per cent and Tamil Nadu at five point four four per cent, while Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka recorded rates close to five per cent. Telangana's rural inflation was six point eight six per cent and urban inflation five point nine two per cent, producing the overall rate of six point three two per cent. The rural urban gap was highlighted as a contributory factor.
Economists said part of the rise reflected the rollout of the new Consumer Price Index (CPI) series, which reduced the weight of food and beverages from over 42 per cent to 37 per cent and raised weights for housing, transport, personal care and services. They added that reweighting can alter headline inflation and that authorities will monitor future data to judge persistence and policy implications.
