Hindustan Zinc and Tata Steel Scale Low-Carbon Zinc Supply
EcoZen is produced using renewable energy and has a verified carbon footprint of less than one tonne (t) of carbon dioxide equivalent per t of zinc, approximately 75 per cent lower than the global industry average. Hindustan Zinc described the product as a sustainable metal solution designed to reduce emissions at the raw material stage and enable downstream industries to advance decarbonisation goals. The company said the partnership with Tata Steel represents a significant milestone in scaling adoption of low-carbon zinc. The collaboration aims to provide procurement pathways that align with climate commitments.
Zinc is widely used to galvanise steel to protect against corrosion and extend service life, making it important for infrastructure, automotive, renewable energy and electronics sectors. Hindustan Zinc estimated that the adoption of EcoZen can help avoid approximately 400 kilogram (kg) of carbon dioxide emissions per t of steel galvanised compared to conventional zinc, offering a tangible route to reduce Scope three emissions for customers. Tata Steel's procurement leaders indicated that the initiative reinforces shared commitments to sustainable practices and to advancing green technologies among suppliers. The companies said the supply arrangement includes delivery to Tata Steel's Sahibabad plant as part of the expanded engagement.
The expanded engagement formalises more than two decades of partnership and brings operational experience together with a focus on decarbonisation and responsible sourcing. Hindustan Zinc supplies to more than 40 countries and holds about 77 per cent of the primary zinc market in India. The collaboration aims to support Scope three emissions reduction and climate-aligned procurement.
