GMR Airports plans a US$2 billion (bn) expansion of facilities at New Delhi and Hyderabad as part of a major modernisation drive. Hyderabad’s upgraded airport will be able to accommodate about 80 million (mn) passengers a year, more than double its current annual volume of 34 mn fliers. The company is India’s largest airport operator by number of fliers annually, while rival Adani Airport Holdings Ltd is the biggest by number of airports and is reported to be looking to invest US$15 bn to boost passenger capacity over the next five years.

Executives indicated the build-outs in New Delhi and Hyderabad may be just the beginning of a wider modernisation plan covering other assets in the portfolio. GMR Airports operates six airports in India, one in the Philippines and another under construction in Greece. Investment plans for the new airport at Nagpur, which the group took over in June 2026, are under discussion.

The company said France’s Aeroports de Paris SA owns 26.5 per cent of GMR Airports and that the group will focus on bidding for local airport projects that the Indian government plans to sell. It added that there are no discussions underway involving redevelopment of overseas airport projects. The statement framed the expansion as part of broader efforts in airport operations, maintenance and related real estate development.

Senior executives also indicated the Hyderabad-based GMR Group is not keen to enter the airline business even if the government changes policy to allow airport operators to run airlines. The government has been reported to be considering such a policy change to boost competition, noting that two carriers, IndiGo and Air India, control nearly 90 per cent of the domestic market. The group said it prefers to remain focused on its core airport business and ancillary services rather than operate airlines.
