Afcons Infrastructure has received a Letter of Acceptance from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for a desalinated-water conveyance tunnel in Mumbai valued at Rs 19.18 billion, including GST and operations and maintenance.

The project involves designing and constructing a tunnel from the proposed water pumping station at Manori to Charkop and extending to Mahavir Nagar in Kandivali. The underground infrastructure is intended to strengthen Mumbai’s water-supply network and facilitate the movement of desalinated water across the city.

The award adds to Afcons’ growing portfolio of complex underground and water infrastructure projects. The company is also executing BMC’s 7.13-km Kasheli-Mulund underground water conveyance tunnel and an 8.7-km treated-water tunnel for CIDCO in Navi Mumbai.

The project assumes significance as Mumbai faces rising water demand and the need to diversify its water sources. Underground conveyance also offers an advantage in a densely developed city by reducing surface disruption during construction.

For the tunnelling and infrastructure sector, the order reinforces the increasing role of underground networks in solving urban utility challenges.

Mumbai’s next generation of water infrastructure is increasingly moving below ground—and the scale of this project reflects that shift.
