Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval for the four-laning of the Kaliabor–Numaligarh section of National Highway 715 in Assam, describing it as a decision that reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s environmental sensitivity and commitment to protecting wildlife.
The decision, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) chaired by the Prime Minister, involves widening and upgrading the existing highway into a four-lane carriageway, including the implementation of wildlife-friendly measures along the Kaziranga National Park stretch.
“This is a very heartening decision. I wholeheartedly welcome it. The move reflects Prime Minister Modi’s compassion towards the environment and wildlife,” Sonowal said.
The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways added that the decision fulfils a long-standing aspiration of the people of Assam, ensuring the protection of Kaziranga’s rich biodiversity, which he described as “the pride of Assam”. He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for a step that will have far-reaching benefits for Assam and the entire North East.
A large portion of the existing highway currently passes either through Kaziranga National Park or along its southern boundary. During the monsoon, flooding forces animals to migrate towards the Karbi Anglong hills, crossing the busy highway — a situation that has led to frequent wildlife deaths due to vehicular accidents.
To address this, the project will include the construction of an elevated corridor of 34.5 kilometres, ensuring free and safe wildlife movement between Kaziranga and the Karbi Anglong hills. Additionally, 30.22 kilometres of the existing road will be upgraded, and 21 kilometres of greenfield bypasses will be built around Jakhalabandha and Bokakhat to decongest the route and enhance safety.
The project will significantly improve connectivity between Guwahati, Kaziranga National Park, and Numaligarh, an important industrial hub, while balancing development with ecological preservation.
