The Delhi government has announced a citywide drive to transform spaces beneath and around flyovers into green corridors and landscaped pockets to improve the capital's appearance and environmental quality. The plan covers routine clearances, soil improvement and the installation of planter boxes and climbing vegetation to soften concrete structures and provide year round greenery. Officials said the initiative will be integrated with existing urban sanitation and tree planting programmes to maximise impact.

Work will include the establishment of vertical gardens on bridge abutments, the planting of native shrubs and grasses in raised beds, and the deployment of efficient irrigation systems to reduce water use. Lighting and signage will be upgraded to ensure safety for pedestrians and maintenance crews, while permeable surfacing will be used where feasible to improve drainage. The authorities will prioritise species that are drought tolerant and low maintenance to ensure long term sustainability.

Implementation will be coordinated by municipal agencies in collaboration with the urban development department and public works teams, with involvement from local ward offices for site selection and upkeep. Contracts for landscaping and maintenance will be awarded through standard procurement channels, and routine inspections will be scheduled to address vandalism and littering. Community groups and resident welfare associations will be invited to take part in adoption and stewardship schemes to foster local ownership.

The programme is designed to enhance walkability, reduce surface temperatures and provide modest improvements in air quality and biodiversity within urban corridors. Officials anticipate that visible greening will strengthen civic pride and support broader efforts to make public infrastructure more people friendly. The government has set out a phased rollout that will allow lessons from early sites to inform scaling across the city and to refine maintenance practices based on observed performance.
