National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has begun a feasibility study for an underground tunnel that will link the major airports serving Delhi and Noida. The study will examine route alignments, technical feasibility, environmental considerations and economic viability to inform project planning. It will also assess traffic patterns and connectivity with existing transport infrastructure to establish operational requirements. The authority will coordinate with airport operators and local governments to gather data and define scope and to refine implementation timelines collaboratively.

The scope will include engineering surveys to evaluate subsoil conditions, hydrology and structural options such as bored tunnelling or cut and cover construction. Safety systems, ventilation, drainage and emergency access will be studied alongside construction phasing to limit disruption. Financial modelling will measure capital and operating costs and examine procurement approaches and funding mechanisms. Stakeholders will be invited to contribute inputs and technical reports will underpin further design work.

Environmental and social impact assessment will form a key part of the work, with studies on noise, air quality, water resources and biodiversity. Traffic modelling will consider integration with road links and mass transit systems to ensure seamless passenger transfers. Land acquisition, utility relocation and resettlement issues will be addressed in accordance with applicable statutes and efforts will be made to minimise community disruption. The schedule for the feasibility study will be set to allow comprehensive analysis and stakeholder consultation.

On completion of the feasibility study the authority will prepare a detailed project report to guide approvals and procurement. The design phase will evaluate construction timelines, contractor capacity and interface requirements between jurisdictions. Decisions on financing and delivery models will follow standard government procedures and coordination among agencies will be essential. The project is intended to strengthen regional connectivity and provide a resilient link for passenger movements between the two airports.
