Successful Trial Run Completed For Manali Tunnel Route

The trial run for the tunnel route between Dyore and Hanogi on the Manali four-lane highway was successfully completed today and authorities said preparations are now complete to open this crucial route to traffic within four days. The opening is expected to bring significant relief to motorists travelling towards Kullu-Manali, making journeys smoother and safer. The trial run assessed traffic flow, safety systems and structural performance along the new tunnel sections. NHAI Board member Vipnesh Sharma was present during the exercise.

The project, costing approximately Rs 26 billion (bn), comprises a total of 10 tunnels along the corridor. Four tunnels have been constructed between Dyore and Hanogi and two of these will initially be opened to traffic. The two sections measure approximately two point eight kilometres and 650 metres in length respectively. Construction teams completed associated roadworks to link the tunnel portals and approach stretches.

A bridge near Khotinala, approximately 45 metres high and 140 metres long, connects the tunnel sections and forms a key structural link on the route. Authorities indicated that integration of the bridge and tunnel segments was a critical element of the alignment and that tests confirmed alignment and load bearing performance. The corridor upgrade is intended to reduce travel time and enhance safety on a route that carries large volumes of tourist and local traffic. Maintenance plans and emergency response measures have been finalised ahead of opening.

Officials said the forthcoming opening will enable uninterrupted movement for vehicles that previously faced delays during adverse weather and peak seasons. Ongoing monitoring and staged inspections will continue after opening to ensure operational readiness and safety compliance. The development is expected to strengthen regional connectivity and support the local economy by improving access to Kullu-Manali. Further operational details and traffic management arrangements will be issued by the highway authority.
