NHAI Plans Rs One tn Highway Push in Tamil Nadu

NHAI has unveiled a plan to invest Rs one trillion (Rs 1 tn) in highways in Tamil Nadu, targeting the development and upgrade of 2,500 km of road corridors. The authority said the initiative seeks to enhance connectivity between industrial hubs, ports and urban centres. Officials indicated that the programme will prioritise four lane and access-controlled sections to ease freight movement and improve regional connectivity.

The projects in the pipeline will include new construction, widening and rehabilitation works along key state and national routes. The investment is expected to attract private participation through toll operate and transfer models and hybrid annuity structures, as part of efforts to accelerate delivery. Funding arrangements are expected to blend central and state allocations with user fees and private capital in various procurement formats.

Engineers will undertake detailed feasibility studies and land acquisition plans before tendering begins. Authorities projected that improved road capacity will reduce travel times, lower logistics costs and support regional manufacturing clusters. The roll-out will be phased over multiple fiscal years to manage funding and construction capacity, with monitoring frameworks established to track progress and digital monitoring and periodic audits used to ensure timelines are met.

State and central agencies will coordinate on clearances and right of way issues to expedite execution. The authority emphasised maintenance provisions and contingency funding to preserve asset quality after completion. Stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector welcomed the signalling of large scale investment while seeking clarity on timelines and tariff regimes, and officials said further details on project breaks, bid schedules and tentative timelines will be released as studies conclude.
