NHAI has unveiled a plan to invest Rs one trillion (Rs 1 tn) in highways in Tamil Nadu, targeting the development and upgrade of 2,500 km of road corridors. The authority said the initiative seeks to enhance connectivity between industrial hubs, ports and urban centres. Officials indicated that the programme will prioritise four lane and access-controlled sections to ease freight movement and improve regional connectivity.

The projects in the pipeline will include new construction, widening and rehabilitation works along key state and national routes. The investment is expected to attract private participation through toll operate and transfer models and hybrid annuity structures, as part of efforts to accelerate delivery. Funding arrangements are expected to blend central and state allocations with user fees and private capital in various procurement formats.

Engineers will undertake detailed feasibility studies and land acquisition plans before tendering begins. Authorities projected that improved road capacity will reduce travel times, lower logistics costs and support regional manufacturing clusters.
