The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) suspended toll collection on the newly opened Kanpur?Lucknow Expressway on Thursday after receiving widespread criticism over reported damage to the carriageway. The decision followed complaints from motorists and local users about sections of the road that were said to show premature surface distress soon after the stretch was opened to traffic. The expressway forms a key link between the two cities and serves heavy intercity traffic.

Motorists and residents conveyed their concerns through photographs and messages that circulated online and drew attention from civic groups. Reports highlighted instances of cracking, rutting and uneven patches that, according to local observers, affected ride quality and raised safety questions on parts of the multi?lane corridor. Concerns were amplified by commentary from commuter groups and local representatives.

In response the authority ordered an immediate technical inspection and directed the agency responsible for operation of the expressway to suspend tolling until remedial work and a safety assessment are completed. The suspension will remain in force until officials confirm that repaired sections meet prescribed standards. Technical teams will assess underlying causes before finalising permanent remedial measures.

The authority also asked the contractor engaged for construction to mobilise resources for swift rectification and to submit a plan for quality assurance. Officials said the authority will monitor progress and publish periodic updates on completion of the assessment and repair programme.
