The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced plans to build a freeway through the heavily congested IT hub of Hinjewadi, modelled on the infrastructure along the Mumbai–Bengaluru bypass.

In the first phase, PMRDA will complete repairs on existing roads by 5 December before accelerating work on the new corridor. Hinjewadi has seen a spate of fatal accidents in recent months due to chaotic traffic conditions, as well as flash floods during the monsoon, causing severe inconvenience to commuters.

“PMRDA will submit a proposal for land acquisition to construct both on-ground and elevated road sections from Hinjewadi Phase 1 to Phase 3, extending along the state highway from Hinjewadi to Ghotawade via Pirangut,” said Metropolitan Commissioner Yogesh Mhase.

The agency responsible for building Metro Line 3 from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar has been instructed to repair road surfaces beneath the elevated Metro and hand them over to the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC).

To reduce accidents, PMRDA will install traffic signals and CCTV cameras throughout the area. An official from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) noted that underpasses and service roads on the Mumbai–Bengaluru bypass will be prioritised to ease congestion near Hinjewadi. In parallel, PMRDA is preparing an action plan to address flash flooding based on a survey of natural stream patterns.

Additionally, PMRDA and NHAI are widening an 850-metre-long, 18-metre-wide stretch near Bhugaon on the Pune–Kolad highway. Beyond Hinjewadi, PMRDA will fast-track a bypass connecting Pune–Ahilyanagar Road from Kharadi to Bakori Road via Kesnand, and take up road improvement works to resolve traffic bottlenecks at Shikrapur and Wagholi.
