Tripura's Congress unit will stage a two-hour blockade of the Agartala-Kamalpur national highway (NH-108B) on July 23 at four locations to protest what it described as the road's poor condition and the hardships faced by commuters. The planned action was announced by senior party leaders as a response to sustained damage following recent heavy rainfall. The highway links West Tripura with Khowai and Dhalai districts and is a principal route for local traffic.\n\nSenior Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman told reporters that the Agartala-Kamalpur via Khowai stretch had become a perilous route after the rains and that traffic had been severely disrupted. He said the Pradesh Congress Committee decided on the midday protest to draw attention to the situation and press authorities for urgent repairs. The party characterised the road's condition as a public safety concern affecting daily commuters.\n\nThe blockade will run from noon to two pm at four points along NH-108B, and the party considered but ultimately rejected calls to extend the duration so as not to unduly inconvenience travellers from Khowai, Kamalpur and surrounding areas. Organisers indicated the shorter window was intended to balance protest impact with commuters' needs. Local residents and transport operators have reportedly faced delays and safety risks since the downpours.\n\nRoy Barman alleged that agencies engaged in upgrading the highway had compromised on construction quality, resulting in rapid deterioration of the surface. The state government has written to Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari seeking repair works on the national highway, according to the report. The notice of protest followed attempts to seek administrative remedy and was presented as a civic grievance aimed at expediting restoration. The protest underscored long-standing grievances over infrastructure quality in the region.
