Kanpur Metro Achieves Milestone with Completion of 950-Metre Up-Line Tunnel

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) ‘Azad’ completed tunnelling the up-line stretch, which included one of the most challenging engineering tasks — crossing a 70-metre section beneath busy railway tracks. This work was executed with precision and coordination to ensure safety and structural stability. The next phase will involve track laying and system installation.
Meanwhile, the parallel down-line tunnel in the same section, being constructed by TBM ‘Vidyarthi,’ is nearing completion. Earlier, both ‘Azad’ and ‘Vidyarthi’ successfully completed a 1.25 km tunnel between Kanpur Central and Nayaganj. The machines were later relaunched from the Swadeshi Cotton Mill ramp to construct a 2.40 km underground stretch covering Transport Nagar, Jhakarkati, and Kanpur Central.
To shift the TBMs across stations, engineers adopted a special ‘Dragging Method,’ enabling the machines to be moved smoothly from one end to another — a notable engineering feat. Currently, passenger services are operational between McRobertganj ramp and Kanpur Central, giving commuters a preview of the expanding metro connectivity.
At the same time, tunnelling is progressing on another 2.40 km section between Kanpur Central and the Swadeshi Cotton Mill ramp. The latest achievement highlights the steady progress of Kanpur Metro, where advanced engineering and careful planning continue to overcome complex challenges, including tunnelling beneath active railway lines.
