Uttar Pradesh government has approved a new corridor linking Barra-8 and Naubasta under a plan by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) to add 83.658 kilometres of lines in Kanpur. The project is intended to improve connectivity and address rising traffic congestion in the city.

The Barra-8–Naubasta corridor will be entirely elevated and measure eight point zero seven eight kilometres, creating an interchange between Line 1 (IIT Kanpur to Naubasta) and the planned Line 2 (CSA Agriculture University to Barra-8). The Kanpur Development Authority prepared the detailed project report through RITES and the state government has approved it; the tender will begin after central approval and construction is expected to start in 2027.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety completed a primary inspection of the Line 1 extension from Kanpur Central to Naubasta, which is planned to begin operations in July. Kanpur Metro opened its first section in December 2021 and currently serves 14 stations, with seven more expected in July.

Seven corridors were proposed: Unnao to Namak Factory via Gumati No. 5, 35.81 kilometres; Naubasta to Barra-8, eight point zero seven eight kilometres; Naubasta to Chakeri, 14.6 kilometres; CSA Agriculture University to Khyora Katari, four point three nine kilometres; Namak Factory to Panki Extension, six kilometres; Khyora Katari to Trans Ganga branch, nine kilometres; and Naubasta to Ramaipur, five point four five kilometres. The corridors are designed to link satellite settlements and industrial zones with the city core to expand the network rapidly.

Authorities noted that Kanpur Metro is among the fastest constructed systems globally and that the expansion builds on earlier phases to provide rapid mass transit. Officials said central approvals and funding remain key to keeping the programme on schedule.
