Assam Seeks Railway Expansion To Boost Regional Connectivity

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi on Sunday, seeking a comprehensive expansion of the railway network in the state to strengthen both regional and cross-border connectivity.

The meeting, which lasted nearly 25 minutes at the Railway Minister’s official residence, focused on proposals aimed at improving transport infrastructure within Assam and enhancing links with neighbouring regions.

Chief Minister Sarma requested the introduction of three new Amrit Bharat trains to and from Assam, along with the development of a new rail corridor connecting Umrangso in Dima Hasao district with Lanka in Hojai district.

He said the proposed link would boost intra-state connectivity and create fresh opportunities for tourism and economic growth in the hilly areas of Assam.

Sarma also urged the Railway Ministry to expedite work on the proposed Kokrajhar–Gelephu Mindfulness City railway line, which will connect Assam with Bhutan’s upcoming Mindfulness City at Gelephu. The cross-border project, he noted, carries tremendous potential to enhance trade, tourism, and cultural exchange between India and Bhutan.

In addition, the Chief Minister appealed for more stoppages for major long-distance trains that pass through Assam, stressing the need for better accessibility for passengers from smaller towns and rural areas.

“These steps will make railway transport more inclusive and accessible for the people of Assam,” Sarma stated.

According to an official release, Minister Vaishnaw responded positively, assuring that the Railway Ministry would implement the proposed measures in a time-bound manner.

Later, sharing details on social media platform X, Sarma described the discussion as “very productive” and confirmed that the Railway Minister had consented to all key proposals.

“We deliberated on expanding the railway’s footprint in Assam to enhance overall connectivity for our people,” he said, outlining four priorities — new trains, new railway links, faster implementation of ongoing works, and additional train stoppages.

The meeting highlights the Assam government’s continued emphasis on infrastructure and connectivity, aligning with its long-term vision to link every district through modern and efficient transport systems.
