The Bhopal Metro project entered a new phase as the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) formally commenced underground tunnel construction on Monday. A Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) was introduced to mark the start of tunnel excavation, signalling a shift from primarily elevated works to subterranean activity. The development forms a key component of wider efforts to establish a modern and environmentally friendly urban transport system in the city.

The TBM was lowered to a depth of approximately 24 metres from where tunnel construction commenced. The machine is described as an advanced unit designed for safe, fast and precise excavation in densely populated urban areas, and its deployment is expected to accelerate the pace of work. Officials noted that use of mechanised tunnelling will reduce disruption on surface roads and improve project efficiency.

The Managing Director (MD) of MPMRCL, S Krishna Chaitanya, extended congratulations to officials and personnel involved and urged adherence to timelines. He emphasised that all works should be completed within the stipulated schedule while strictly maintaining quality and safety standards during the construction phase. Project teams were directed to maintain steady progress and coordinate closely with civic authorities to manage traffic and public safety.

The first phase of the Bhopal Metro was inaugurated in December and was flagged off by the chief minister and a union minister, marking a milestone for the capital's urban transport infrastructure. The initial corridor spans seven kilometres and includes eight elevated stations designed to offer fast, convenient and reliable connectivity along key city routes. The start of underground works is expected to complement the elevated sections and contribute to reducing commute times for residents. Continued monitoring and community engagement will be pursued as construction advances.
