The Bhopal Metro project entered a new phase as Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) commenced underground tunnel construction, deploying a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to begin excavation. The TBM was lowered to a depth of 24 metres to initiate tunnelling in densely populated urban areas, where the machine is expected to enable safe, precise and faster excavation. Officials from MPMRCL supervised the start of work and directed teams to maintain progress while adhering to quality and safety standards.

The advanced TBM has been selected for its suitability in urban conditions and is anticipated to accelerate the pace of construction compared with conventional methods. The project authority highlighted that the use of mechanised tunnelling will minimise surface disruption and allow coordinated execution of other civil works. Staff and engineers were instructed to follow prescribed protocols and timelines to ensure timely delivery of the underground section.

The start of underground construction is a significant milestone for the Bhopal Metro Project, which aims to provide a modern, safe and environmentally friendly public transport system in the city. The first phase of the metro service was inaugurated by the chief minister and a union minister on 22 December, marking a notable advance in urban infrastructure for the state capital. The first phase, part of the Orange Line priority corridor, spans seven kilometres and includes eight elevated stations designed to provide fast and reliable connectivity.

Completion of the underground works will complement elevated corridors and expand the system's reach to densely populated areas that require subsurface alignment. Project management has signalled commitment to meeting the stipulated timeline while maintaining construction quality and passenger safety considerations. Further tunnelling operations will proceed in phases under continuous monitoring by the corporation.
