The central government has approved Mumbai Metro Line Five and Five A, clearing a revised alignment that will link Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Ulhasnagar. The new alignment is presented as a mass transit alternative for an area heavily dependent on road transport and will aim to relieve congestion on key corridors. Planners view the corridor as an important addition to the wider regional metro network by connecting rapidly developing suburbs with major transport links.

Line Five will include stations such as Kapurbawdi, Balkum, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata, Dhamankar Naka and Bhiwandi, with further stops at Temghar, Rajnouli, Govegaon, Kongan West and Kongan East. Line Five A and its spur extend from Durgadi through Khadakpada, Bhoirwadi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Path and Kalyan to Shanti Nagar, Chhatrapati Shivaji Chowk and Ulhasnagar. The combined project is intended to carry passengers across the Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan–Ulhasnagar corridor and to provide a direct alternative to existing road and rail movements.

The combined Line Five and Line Five A project is estimated to cost Rs 181,305.5 million (mn), equivalent to about Rs 181.31 billion (bn) after conversion from crores, and authorities report the Thane–Bhiwandi section is nearing completion with a target to open around December 2026. The extended network towards Kalyan and Ulhasnagar is targeted for 2030–31. The corridor will interconnect with the ongoing Metro Line Four, the proposed Metro Line 12 (Kalyan–Taloja) and the Central Railway network to improve access to commercial areas and government establishments.

Officials indicate Bhiwandi has significant warehousing and logistics activity that will benefit from rail connectivity, while Kalyan and Ulhasnagar stand to gain from deeper metro penetration in densely populated neighbourhoods. The revised alignment is expected to reduce dependence on congested roads and provide improved options for cross?city journeys that are not served efficiently by the existing railway network. Planners say the expansion strengthens resilience in the regional transport system and supports projected urban growth.
