Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) will close platforms 16 and 17 for 85 days from one February to 26 April to allow comprehensive infrastructure upgrades and redevelopment works. Central Railway said the suspension of operations on the two platforms is necessary to accommodate traffic and power blocks linked to foundation and allied works. The blocks are part of a wider redevelopment programme intended to improve capacity and passenger management.

Long distance services that normally terminate at CSMT will be short terminated at nearby stations until the works are complete, with several services redirected to Dadar and one service to Thane. Railway sources listed affected trains including the Amravati–CSMT Express 12112, the Ballarshah–CSMT Nandigram Express 11002, the Howrah–CSMT Express 12810, the Bhubaneswar–CSMT Konark Express 11020, the Bidar–CSMT Express 22144, the Latur–CSMT Express 22108 and the Madgaon–CSMT Tejas Express 22120, while the Mangaluru–CSMT Express 12134 will be short terminated at Thane. Officials said platform operations will be restored only after the completion of the scheduled works to ensure safety and continuity.

Railway officials advised passengers to plan journeys and check revised timetables and terminal points for affected services during the period of restricted operations. The redevelopment is being managed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) and is executed by Ahluwalia Contracts Limited under approvals granted by Central Railway on 19 December 2022. The project has an estimated cost of Rs 24,500 mn.

The redevelopment covers a total area of 461,534 square metres, including 279,507 square metres of new construction, 130,912 square metres earmarked for renovation, 37,703 square metres of open areas adjacent to the terminus and an additional 13,412 square metres for ancillary constructions. Planned passenger amenities include dedicated buildings for passenger facilities and parcel services, decks to link mail and express trains with suburban services, footbridges and skywalks, and open spaces near the heritage building reserved for passenger movement with a perimeter wall to deter unauthorised entry. The works are designed to improve circulation and operational efficiency at the terminus.
