Delhi L-G Clears 5.5-km Corridor and Six Metro Access Plans

Delhi Lieutenant Governor T S Sandhu approved the construction of a 5.5-km elevated corridor on Maa Anandmayee Marg in South Delhi to ease congestion and improve traffic movement. The project is intended to address traffic generated by vehicles travelling to and from the Okhla Phase I and II industrial areas.

The approval was granted at a meeting of the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning and Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC), the Delhi Development Authority’s apex body for clearing infrastructure projects. The elevated corridor is expected to bypass around 12 intersections and reduce traffic volumes at ground level.

An underpass and roundabout are also planned at the Crowne Plaza intersection on Okhla Estate Marg. Officials said the measures would improve pedestrian movement and support better infrastructure for non-motorised transport along Maa Anandmayee Marg.

UTTIPEC separately approved multimodal integration plans for six metro stations to strengthen last-mile connectivity. The stations are GTB Nagar on the Yellow Line, Sarita Vihar on the Violet Line, Akshardham on the Blue Line, Rohini West and Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital on the Red Line, Malviya Nagar on the Yellow Line and Shastri Park on the Red Line.

The plans cover an area of around 300 metres around each station and include dedicated auto-rickshaw lanes, pedestrian facilities and designated pick-and-drop areas. With these approvals, all 31 multimodal integration plans prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation for Phase I and II metro corridors have received UTTIPEC clearance.

The authority also cleared a project at Mukarba Chowk in northwest Delhi. It includes widening the existing road overbridge on the Outer Ring Road from six lanes to 10 lanes and building a new four-lane road overbridge connecting Jahangirpuri Industrial Area with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar over the Delhi-Sonipat railway line. The work is aimed at improving traffic flow between Mukarba Chowk and Madhuban Chowk.
