Indian Railways has approved the Rs 9.93 billion (bn) Arakkonam–Chengalpattu doubling project, a major investment intended to ease congestion on the Chennai suburban rail network and improve both freight and passenger movement. The 68 km project under Southern Railway will add a second track along a section that handles heavy daily traffic and is expected to reduce delays and improve punctuality. The work forms part of a wider effort to bolster rail capacity around Chennai as urban growth and industrial activity increase.

The route links Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam and is widely used by suburban commuters, long-distance services and freight operators. Railway officials noted that the existing single-line section is running close to full capacity, and demand is expected to rise further in the coming years. Doubling the line is intended to improve train frequency and operational flexibility while reducing waiting times at crossings.

The doubling scheme is integrated with proposals for the Chennai suburban circular rail network and was described by the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw as a measure to ease pressure on the busy suburban system and to raise operational efficiency. Officials said the project will also strengthen freight movement across the corridor, supporting transport of commodities such as cement, automobiles, foodgrains, iron and steel. Enhanced rail links will support the logistical needs of manufacturers and logistics firms in the region.

The corridor passes through several industrial and economic hubs including Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam and Irungattukottai, locations that house automobile plants, manufacturing units and logistics centres that rely heavily on rail connectivity. The proposed Parandur airport near Kancheepuram increases the strategic importance of the route and planners view improved rail infrastructure as a means to bolster future passenger and cargo links. Residents in western suburbs welcomed the announcement and local stakeholders anticipate safer, faster and more efficient services once doubling is completed. Railways said the project is aimed at meeting projected passenger and freight demand across Tamil Nadu while improving network resilience.
