Kilambakkam Skywalk And Railway Station To Open End Of June
Officials said the pending girder installation will be completed next week and that roofing works, passenger seating installation and finishing activities are already under way at the station site located between Vandalur and Urappakkam on the Chennai Beach–Chengalpattu suburban corridor. The Rs 790 million (Rs 790 mn) infrastructure project includes an elevated pedestrian skywalk, escalators and lifts, covered walkways and direct station connectivity to improve passenger access across GST Road. The scheme aims to provide seamless multi-modal transport for commuters travelling between Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tambaram and southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
The new facility is expected to reduce traffic congestion and ease the difficulty passengers currently face when crossing GST Road from the bus terminus. Southern Railway indicated that station operations can commence immediately after the skywalk integration works are completed and that necessary permissions and traffic diversions delayed earlier work. Officials attributed prior delays to election-related restrictions, traffic diversion approvals and construction challenges on the busy GST Road stretch.
With the end of June deadline confirmed, commuters are preparing for the opening of what is projected to be one of the city's principal transport integration hubs. Project completion is likely to improve interchange efficiency and passenger safety while supporting greater use of suburban rail services. Local authorities will monitor operations and make any final adjustments after the station becomes operational.
