Indian Railways has sanctioned an upgrade of the electric traction system on the Mahbubnagar?Secunderabad?Medchal section of South Central Railway, covering approximately 141 route kilometres.

The existing one by 25 kV electric traction system will be converted to a two by 25 kV configuration at an estimated cost of Rs 2,850.1 million (mn).

The two by 25 kV system is intended to provide a more stable and efficient power supply for train operations, improving reliability and operational resilience. The upgrade will support smoother traction for both passenger and freight services and is expected to reduce constraints on train movements. Technical works will be carried out along the entire section and will involve modifications to substations and line equipment. The work will be planned to minimise disruption to services while upgrading electrical assets.

The Mahbubnagar?Secunderabad?Medchal section lies on the Dharmavaram?Dhone?Mahbubnagar?Secunderabad?Medchal?Mudkhed?Indore?Ajmer corridor, which is part of the High?Density Network and carries substantial passenger and freight traffic. Upon completion, freight movement on the route will become more efficient, enhancing speed and capacity for goods transportation and supporting trade and industry across the region. The project therefore aims to strengthen connectivity and economic activity by reducing bottlenecks on a key corridor.

Indian Railways has stated that the initiative will further strengthen its commitment to a modern, future?ready rail network and will benefit passengers and industry through improved infrastructure and operational efficiency. Project implementation planning will be coordinated by South Central Railway with timelines to be announced as work progresses. The upgrade is presented as part of ongoing efforts to prepare core corridors for higher traffic and improved service standards. Stakeholders will be engaged during implementation to ensure alignment with operational priorities.
