Indore Metro has entered a new stage with the launch of its first tunnel boring machine, Narmada. The 410 metric tonne (t) machine was launched from a shaft near Indore Airport to build the underground tunnel between the airport and Bada Ganpati. The deployment marks the start of mechanised tunnelling after extensive preparation of construction infrastructure. Officials said the step represented a key progression for the underground section.

The Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited deployed the TBM after assembling it at ground level and lowering it into the launch shaft. Engineers used a Megalift System and a Strand Jack Assembly to lift, move and lower the machine, with a lifting arrangement capable of handling loads of more than 1,000 t. The operation required careful sequencing and controlled precision to ensure alignment and stability before the machine commenced excavation. Teams across engineering, safety and logistics coordinated the activity to manage the heavy handling and technical complexity.

The TBM will undertake excavation of the underground section between the airport and Bada Ganpati, enabling tunnelling beneath densely developed areas with limited surface disruption. The mechanised method reduces the need for large scale open excavation and supports maintenance of safety, environmental controls and minimal disturbance to traffic and utilities at surface level. Detailed engineering procedures and safety protocols governed the launch to address geotechnical and operational challenges associated with deep tunnelling. Monitoring and inspections will continue as the drive advances through the urban corridor.

MPMRCL managing director S. Krishna Chaitanya inspected the launching operation and reviewed the technical process with the project team, signalling project readiness to move into one of its most demanding phases. With the TBM now positioned at the launch shaft, active tunnelling work can commence and progress will be tracked by project engineers and administrators. The development constitutes an important milestone for Indore Metro as the initiative advances towards completing its underground section and integrating it with the wider network. Stakeholders will follow subsequent tunnel drives as the project proceeds.
