Jupiter Wagons to Set Up Private Railwheel Manufacturing Platform
Lucchini RS will take a 15 per cent equity stake in Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory and SIMEST will acquire a further 10 per cent, taking the total to 25 per cent. The partners state the combined investment is about €28 million (mn), approximately Rs 3,072.6 mn or Rs 3.0726 bn. SIMEST is backed by the Italian government and will join as an equity partner while Cassa Depositi e Prestiti will provide financial and advisory support. The arrangement benefits from assistance under the Sistema Italia framework.
The manufacturing platform will merge the existing Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory facility at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with a new complex being built in Odisha to enable end-to-end production. Once the Odisha plant is operational the combined facilities are expected to allow complete in-house manufacture of railway wheels, axles and wheelsets, making it the only fully integrated private railwheel manufacturing platform in India. The project will address stages from material processing through heat treatment, machining and assembly to finished wheelsets. The partners plan to apply European technology and processes within the Indian manufacturing environment.
The facility is intended to serve rising demand from Indian Railways and other domestic customers while building capacity for exports to international markets. Jupiter Wagons expects the collaboration to strengthen India's ability to produce critical railway components and reduce reliance on imports. The move is presented as part of a broader trend of foreign collaboration to localise specialised rail supply chains and to support domestic manufacturing growth. The partners intend to scale production to meet domestic orders and export opportunities.
